In order to return to the basic concept of positive face to face contact with our community, the department utilized a portion of its FY 2009 Community Policing Grant to deploy bicycle patrols in our downtown area and local neighborhoods.
Throughout 2008, our 4 bicycles and 2 ATVs were routinely used to enhance the police department’s ability to patrol and respond to areas not easily accessible to patrol vehicles such as the wooded areas surrounding our schools, parks, conservation land, trails and other recreation areas. Our bicycles and ATVs were also deployed to provide service at special events such as Summerfest and to support various other community programs. All officers that have expressed an interest in serving on the ATV Unit were sent to formal training in the use and safe operation of these vehicles.
Unfortunately, the Department's FY 2009 Community Policing Grant was cut by 24% with some projections calling for its complete elimination by FY 2010. Since bicycle and ATV maintenance costs are funded entirely by this grant, the long term existence of this program remains questionable.
