The Rape Aggression Defense System is a program of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques. RAD is not a martial arts program. It is a comprehensive course for women that begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and avoidance, while progressing on to the basics of hands-on self defense training.
The 15 hour course designed for women ages 13 and older is usually broken down into 5, 3 hour sessions offered during the evening hours. Each student is provided with a student workbook/manual that outlines the entire physical defense program and serves as an information source after completion of the course.
During 2008, 2 RAD Basic Women’s Classes were scheduled but were later cancelled due to low enrollment.
RAD Kids is a personal empowering, awareness and safety education program for children aged 5-7 and 8-10. The program combines risk education and physical defense training in the hope of preventing the abduction of children. It provides a consistent, structured, proactive curriculum utilizing fun, interactive exercises creating a dynamic learning environment.
In 2008, Off. Kristen Marciniec conducted 1 RAD Kids class that had a total enrollment of 15 school-aged children.
Unfortunately, our RAD Instructor's salaries are funded entirely through the department's Community Policing Grant. The Department's FY 2009 Community Policing Grant was cut by 24% with some projections calling for its complete elimination by FY 2010. Absent any other potential funding sources, the existence of our RAD program now remain questionable.
