Monson Police Department
Archives
The following photographs of the late Sergeant Robert E. Chaffee has been generously shared with us by his wife, Mrs. Barbara Chaffee
At the time of this photograph in 1952, Robert E. Chaffee had been the town's only police officer
since his appointment in 1949 when he replaced Herbert Aldrich.
Night Police Officer Aldrich had served the town in that capacity since 1909.
Here Officer Chaffee is seen here using his own personal automobile for patrol.
The town compensated him $200 a year for the use of his car until March 1958 when the Town appropriated funds for Monson's first police cruiser.
At that time there was no formal training and he was on call 24 hours a day.
In 1959 the police department increased to three officers with the appointments of Michael Defoe and John Perry.
In 1963 Officer Chaffee atteneded the 32nd Local Police Officer Training Class held at the Massachusetts State Police Academy.
This photograph of Officer Chaffee was taken at Monson's Bicentennial Celebration in 1960

In November 1960, The Town of Monson formed its first Civil Defense Auxiliary Police force. The auxiliary group that worked and trained on a volunteer basis was formed under the jurisdiction of the Selectmen and the Civil Defense Director. Thanks to Leonard D. Hasenjager, who served as the Auxiliary Police Trainer, for these articles.
This is a copy of Leonard Hasenjager's original appointment certificate.
This circa 1961 photo shows Leonard Hasenjager displaying the original Civil Defense Auxiliary Police uniform. It is believed to have been taken near his Homer Drive residence with a view of the former Kolowrat Farm (currently the Monson H. S. and Quarry Hill School) in the background.
