The Monson Water & Sewer Department is pleased to announce that its application to the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund (DWSRF) loan program has made the final priority list and is being recommended for financing in 2007 by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection
(MassDEP). The DWSRF loan program assists Public Water Suppliers in implementing the requirements of the Safe Drinking Water Act by providing low interest loans (2%) for a period up to 20 years to water suppliers with qualifying projects.
The DWSRF loan program has made 1.8 million dollars available to the Town of Monson for comprehensive system improvements based on preliminary cost estimates. The funding availability is the first step, as the Water Department will next seek Town Meeting approval in order to move forward with this major undertaking.
Three major system improvements are proposed to be funded:
The construction of an additional water storage tank. The new tank will provide the Town with additional storage capacity and redundancy of a critical system component. It will also enable the Town to remove the existing tank from service for cleaning and painting in the future.
Upgrades at the Bethany Road Well, bringing that facility to MassDEP requirements and allowing it to be used on a permanent basis. The proposed work there includes construction of a new building with up to date electrical systems, security measures, flow meter and corrosion control system.
A water main replacement proposed for Fern Hill Rd. and a short section of State Avenue to allow a permanent interconnection with the Town of Palmer’s water system.
The Water Department is very excited about this tremendous opportunity to address the deficiencies in our water system in the most affordable way and to insure the quality of our drinking water for future generations.
